Tips on Preparing Images (Laurie Naiman)

" What is a Photo Book and how can I make it work for me?"

Most of us have been sharing our images by conventional means - prints, albums, projection, websites, and CD/DVDs. The ambitious among us dream about producing our own hard-cover books, but the costs of private production are usually prohibitive, especially when the volume is limited. Thanks to the Internet and automated production systems, a new option is now available to everyone.

Professional and fine art photographers are increasingly using online services to create their own Photo Portfolio Books.

Greg Hu and his team from Shutterfly.com, one of the leading providers, will join us for a special Program Evening on Wed Apr 25 to show and discuss how Photo Books can fit your needs and your budget.

We will first be presented with some of the best photo books made by professional photographers. Webmaster Laurie Naiman will bring one he recently made from images captured during his many trips to Death Valley.

We will learn about the physical qualities of the book such as the printing technology used behind the scene, the paper, the binding, and the cover. We will discuss what works well and what doesn't work so well.

We will discuss the layout options such as the use of background, photo placements and presentations, and so on.

Now, how do I create my own Photo Book?

  • We will have a live demo of the online Shutterfly service along with recommendations for optimizing the digital photos. We will discuss file formats, resolution, pre-press corrections and use of profiles, and so on.
  • We will finally see how to submit the Photo Book for manufacturing.

Additional questions to be addressed include:

  • customer service
  • how much does it cost?
  • do I get a discount if I make several copies?
  • what if I don't like the Photo Book when I receive it?
  • Shutterfly is not the only service provider offering Photo Books. What makes them a better choice for me?

We look forward to seeing you there. Since members from other camera clubs are being invited you should try to arrive early (soon after 7 pm) for a good seat and parking spot.
