Arrival, an image by Wright Schickli, has been selected for inclusion in Grayscale: A Picture Show, ajuried group black and white exhibition at the Black Box Gallery in Portland. Black Box Gallery noted that there is often a classic, nostalgic and dynamic translation to black and white photography which has an important tradition of luminous, well-crafted and thoughtfully composed imagery. Black Box sought a diversity of photographic works from contemporary photographers involved in this dialog of history and tradition that use their own modern voice, visions and aesthetics of imagery. The juror was Todd Johnson, founder and director of the Black Box Gallery.Twenty-six images were selected for exhibition in the Gallery; and an additional fifty images, including Wright’s, were selected for the On-Line Annex Exhibition. The in-gallery exhibition will take place July 1 through July 25. Images can be viewed at https://blackboxgallery.com/Grayscale-A Picture Show-2025-EP.html.
Wright says: Arrival was captured this February as my boat approached the day’s landing spot near the South Shetland Islands. I took the image with my dedicated Leica B&W infrared camera and a 21mm lens by leaning way out over the railing of my cabin deck and hanging on for dear life. I thought infrared captured the mood of Antarctica well.
